Employment vs. Self-Employment

Advocates of employment will talk about health care, sick pay, and other such things. And they would be right to. But that is all they have. The net upside to self-employment, in my opinion, is huge.

As long as you are employed, you are not in control of your destiny. You may think that if you do well enough, you'll get a promotion, which will give you x, but there is not guarantee of that. It seems like the conventional wisdom is that you can't earn as much online as you can face-to-face. I imagine this is because online lessons aren't seen to be as valuable as the more traditional lessons by teachers.

I saw a discussion a couple of weeks ago where someone was arguing that you won't be able to get close to $30 an hour for online lessons. His reasoning was based on the fact that some teachers offer lessons at $5 an hour.

This is the wrong way to approach pricing and, in fact, the opposite is true; teaching online and freelancing gives you the ability to charge much higher prices .

To illustrate this, let's take the second best-paid country for English teachers from the list above: Saudi Arabia. Personally, I wouldn't like to go and teach in Saudi Arabia (for reasons that I won't go into). But that doesn't mean that I can't teach Saudi Arabians.

Pick a niche or topic, run with it, gain followers and look for opportunities. I have a friend (who prefers to remain anonymous) in the Male Fashion niche who makes up to $1,500 per advert .

So if you you build up enough of a following, you can replace any day job income with it.

3.4: Tsu

Yeah, I had that same blank look on my face when I heard the name too. Don’t worry.

But Tsu is the only remaining advertising based Social Media outlet on the internet. Bubblews has gone under, and bitLanders now offers money to charity on your behalf instead.

Basically for inviting users, sharing content and promoting yourself and hopefully converting on adverts on your page you can start making money from it:

IZEA isn’t another obscure social media site; instead it’s a way to connect people with large followings social media, and occasionally blog and YouTube ones with big brands who are looking to promote themselves.

I've always been a hustler ; it's just in my blood. Since college, I've always had more than one job, whether it was working in special collections at my college library, selling scrapbooking supplies to crafty moms, or teaching ballet to little kids.

Sometimes I would drive from one job right to another one after being at school all day, which was great because I always had money in my pocket, and it set me up to work more than one job as an adult so I could eventually become fully self-employed .

However, I can't say that I've done anything especially crazy to find ways to earn more money, unless you count working far more hours than I should have, staying up super late writing back in the early days of my blogging career.

There are, however, more unique ways to make money than just helping out on your college campus or walking your neighbor's dog. Below are three crazy (but totally legal) ways you can earn more money that you might not realize exist.

How to Earn $10,000 in One Hour

Many books on time management recommend the practice of thinking of each hour of your time as being worth a specific quantity of money. It's an extension of the time is money concept. First you figure out what your hourly rate is, and then you use that as a guide to determine where you should spend your time. If you want to earn more money, then you must first mentally raise your hourly rate, so you can start doing activities that are worth more. For example, if you currently earn $50/hour and want to earn $75/hour, then you have to do less and less $50/hour work as you shift to doing $75/hour work. Brian Tracy advocates this type of thinking in his time management programs, as do many other time management experts. I've used this model myself in the past.

I've spent a lot of time considering this paradigm, and at present I have only one problem with it.

It's stupid!

It's possibly the stupidest paradigm you can use for income generation.

While it seems enticing on the surface, in the long run it will hurt you more than help you. Let's take a look under the hood…

On the positive side, if you tell yourself that your time is worth $50/hour, then that can help you focus. It can make you aware of those activities that clearly aren't worth $50/hour that you might still be doing, especially if you track your time usage with a time log. Once you become aware that you're wasting time on low payoff activities, then you can begin reducing, eliminating, or outsourcing those low payoff tasks. For example, you could recruit a part-time personal assistant to offload much of the $10/hour and $20/hour work. My wife runs an online vegetarian magazine. and she has a staff of people working for her including an assistant, editors, and writers to offload much of the work that can be done at a lower hourly rate than her own. It works great.

This seems like good common sense if you want to improve your productivity. If you can earn $50/hour, then you should spend as much as your work time as possible doing $50+/hour work, shouldn't you? Recruit others to do any work that pays less. The benefits of this particular optimization may be hidden in a large corporate environment where personal productivity isn't strongly linked to pay, but it's very noticeable if you're self-employed.

The big problem is that when you tell yourself your time is worth $50/hour, you're simultaneously telling yourself that it isn't worth $75/hour or $200/hour or $10,000/hour. You're programming your subconscious mind to limit the range of opportunities you will notice. Because you won't be on the lookout for $10,000/hour ideas, you'll overlook them completely. If you tell yourself you earn $50/hour, you'll think in terms of $50/hour opportunities.

Thinking in terms of an hourly rate may help limit your downside, but it also severely limits your upside. And that's a really bad trade-off, bad enough that it requires me to dismiss this whole paradigm as utterly stupid. There's no way the upside of turning some $20 hours into $50 hours can compensate for missing those $10,000 hours. That's penny-wise, pound-foolish.

One $10,000 hour is worth 200 $50 hours. That's more than a month of full-time work! You don't need too many of those huge payoff hours to pick up the slack of some of those less productive $0-20 hours, but if you miss out on even one of those $10,000 hours, it's a crippling blow that overwhelms all other thoughts about financial productivity.

In the long run, your greatest financial risk isn't whether you made the mistake of succumbing to doing $20/hour work when you could have done $50/hour work. Your greatest risk is missing those $10,000 hours. And most people miss out on them completely. It's ironic that people think of being a salaried employee as being low-risk and being an entrepreneur as high-risk. The reality is just the opposite. One of the reasons I chose the entrepreneurial path is that it's just way too damned risky to be an employee. I'm not kidding. It's easy to hit a good number of those $10,000 hours as an entrepreneur, but it's a lot harder to do so as an employee.

How many $10,000 hours did you enjoy this year?

How rare is it for a $50/hour salaried employee to experience even one of those $10,000 hours in the entire course of their career? Pretty rare I would say. Certainly not a normal, expected occurrence. But this isn't because such opportunities don't exist it's because your limiting beliefs about how much your time is worth prevent you from noticing them. Simply choosing to believe that it is possible will open the door to allowing it to manifest. You don't need anyone's permission to believe you can come up with an idea that you can implement in less than an hour that will earn you an extra $10,000. Such ideas are naturally plentiful, but you won't notice them until you adopt the right mindset. Right now as you're reading this, such an opportunity is practically staring you in the face, and you're completely oblivious to it. It's just like how my colorblindness prevents me from ever seeing the color red as other people can; it's beyond my ability to perceive.

Once you release the brakes and embrace the idea that a single hour of your time could be worth $10,000 or more, you'll almost immediately begin to notice such opportunities. I suspect you'll uncover the first one in less than 48 hours.

What the heck is $50/hour work anyway? Who determines what an hour of your time is worth?

If you're self-employed, then you set your own hourly rate. And that's fine if your work requires hourly billing. But don't fall into the trap of thinking that all of your working time is worth that same hourly rate. If you do that, you'll begin to tune out much more lucrative opportunities.

If you're an employee in a corporate environment, then your salary sets your hourly rate, depending on how many hours you typically work each week. And in this high-risk situation you have a double problem. First, you have the previously mentioned challenge of getting yourself to think outside the hourly rate box. But secondly, in corporate environments it's rare to find fair incentives for employees to have such breakthroughs. If you have one of those $10,000 hours on the job, you probably won't share in the rewards. You'll just enjoy your usual $50 pay for that hour, while the company keeps the other $9950 you've created. At least entrepreneurs and self-employed people get to keep the whole $10,000.

Whom does the hourly rate mindset benefit? It benefits those who get to keep the extra value above and beyond that rate. But because this paradigm suffers an imbalance between value creation and reward, I think it also cripples the will to generate those $10,000 ideas. If you aren't going to benefit from the extra value you create, then why bother to create it?

The solution is to think like an entrepreneur, even if you're an employee. If you can devise and implement an idea in one hour that ends up saving your company $25,000 a year, I'd say you damn well deserve to be paid $10,000 for that hour of your time.

But too often employees don't bother to negotiate such terms with their employers. They willingly submit themselves to the tyranny of the hourly rate. Having been an employer myself though, I'll tell you that if an employee came to me and said she had a low-risk idea that would put $25,000 in my pocket and which could be implemented independently by her in an hour, and she asked to be paid $10,000 only if and when the idea proved itself, I'd be pulling out my checkbook. In fact, I'd ask her if she had a twin I could hire too. But if you don't negotiate such deals in advance, then by default the employer receives all the value above and beyond your normal hourly rate.

If I ever found myself an employee (which I can't imagine happening), I'd be on the constant lookout for those $10,000 ideas. I'd befriend someone who had the authority to pay bonuses in the manner described above, even if I had to work my way up the chain of command a bit. Then I'd look for simple ways to increase the company's revenue or cut its costs that would produce tangible, measurable results. And I'd negotiate the ability to either be paid a fixed sum if the value can be determined in advance or to share in a certain percentage of whatever value was created.

If I found that my boss didn't have the necessary authority or the will to authorize this sort of thing, then I'd keep going up the chain of command until I found someone who did. It's simply a matter of finding someone who will directly benefit from my extra value creation. It could be a stock-owning VP, the CEO, or even an investor. People who have a direct financial stake in the enterprise will not want to see profit-creating or cost-cutting ideas being squashed unreasonably, but beneath this level, you might run into a lot more closed-mindedness. But fortunately those who share in the profits of your ideas will normally have the authority to overrule those who don't. So don't let your boss get in your way. If you develop the habit of implementing $10,000 ideas, you'll soon be the boss anyway.

If I found myself working for a company or organization where this level of flexibility was impossible, I'd quit and go work in a less draconian environment. There are enough progressive companies around now that it isn't necessary to work for one of the unenlightened ones.

All Hours Are Not Created Equal

My income isn't based on how much time I spend working. It's a function of the value I create. I can work a whole month and produce less monetary value than I do in one breakthrough hour. Every hour is unique.

I stopped thinking in terms of a fixed hourly rate many years ago. In practical terms an hour of my time could be worth $0, or it could be worth $10,000 or more, depending on what I do with that particular hour. Much of the time I pursue activities that don't generate any income at all, even though I still consider it to be productive work. Answering email doesn't seem to pay too well, and I don't get paid an hourly rate for writing blog entries and articles. But sometimes I'll get an idea which I can implement in just 30-60 minutes that will earn me an extra $10,000 over the course of a year, often continuing for many years thereafter. So the concept of an hourly rate, even an average hourly rate, is meaningless to me.

A recent specific example was adding those Chitika eMiniMalls ads to this site. As I previously reported. this took very little time to implement (less than an hour), but it should ultimately generate thousands of dollars a year in extra revenue. And it takes me virtually no work at all to maintain this income aside from depositing checks.

Edit 6/25/06: As it turns out, Chitika's performance declined as they improved their system, so I later dropped them and no longer recommend them (along with many other bloggers). Therefore, that turned out to be closer to a $1000 hour instead of the $10,000 one it initially seemed to be. However, adding a donations page to the site, which took about an hour as well, has done much better than I expected and is easily a $10,000+ hour. So the lesson is to keep experimenting.

In the normal course of my work, those $10,000 hours are becoming more common. I normally have several a year, along with some $1000 hours, $5000 hours, and so on. Usually the money doesn't come right away, but it still blows away the concept of an hourly rate. It wouldn't even be accurate to say that it's those other hours that make the $10,000 hour possible. Sometimes the $10,000 is just a random idea from out of the blue, or maybe it's something that comes to me from a book or another person.

Almost always the $10,000 hour is the result of a great idea. And great ideas can strike at any time. When I get one of those $10,000 candidate ideas, I'll normally drop everything and implement it right away. If it flops (and usually it does), I've lost an hour, but I still learned something. Most of the time it isn't a total loss. I end up with a lot of $10, $50, and $250 ideas too. But I can afford to endure dozens of those relative flops for the chance to hit just one more $10,000 idea. And when it works, I must say it's pretty darn nice.

It's not that $10,000 is a lot of money per se. The idea isn't to make just $10,000 here and there. It's to make $10,000 for only one hour's worth of work. That's what makes the entrepreneurial game so much fun. You never know when one of those $10,000 ideas will strike. Imagine working each day with the very real possibility that you could earn an extra $10,000 that day, completely out of the blue. If your normal hourly rate for a full-time job was $10,000, you'd be earning $20 million per year, and in that case $10,000/hour would be no big deal. But if you earn something closer to $50/hour, then one of those $10,000 hours is a major breakthrough. And the truth is that those $10,000 hours are a lot more accessible than you might think.

Regardless of whether you're an employee, self-employed, or otherwise entrepreneurial, don't cap your income by thinking in terms of an hourly rate. Once you free yourself from this punishing paradigm, you'll invite the opportunity to enjoy some of those $10,000 hours. It's really just a matter of giving yourself permission to experience them.

Take stock of what you truly need in life

I said that in many ways I've managed to get my finances under control. If I was to take away my legal bills I would consider myself to be doing pretty well.

I have never been one to need all the shiny new toys in my life and I've learnt to live a frugal life.

Sure there plenty of times that I've stood in front of something I thought that I wanted and considered whether I should splash out. On bad days where you need some immediate gratification splashing out on a purchase is a natural instinct for many.

There have been too many times that I've stood in front of a PlayStation 4, even when a retail chain was doing a clear loss leader with a $200 discount. I recall standing there for literally 10 minutes rationalizing to myself that I didn't need it.

There was an emotional tug to the PlayStation. I used to play this with my youngest daughter. It was our thing.

Self discipline kicked in.

I thought to myself, would I really play it that much? I considered all the things I could do with my time without having the distraction of a gaming console, all the things I could do with that money if I didn't buy it. Things that would be good for my health, my mind, my soul, even things that would help me earn more money.

I'm proud to say that I still don't have a PlayStation 4.

I don't need one.

Who knows, one day when I have managed to earn extra money to pay off my debt and solidify a supplemental income stream this could be amongst the list of rewards or treats. I imagine by then though I'll have found other things to occupy my time.

The Strategy

Step 1: Reducing our need for money.

For a couple years before we set out on this journey both Alyssa and I went through a large transformation period with money.

Much of our money dependence came from our high standards of living, and what we set as the “minimum standard”.

We began by auditing these and analyzing how we could make adjustments to reduce expenses. What we discovered was that we could be happy with far less things and far less space.

By focusing resources on things that gave us energy and disposing of energy suckers, our budget was transformed and so was our life.

As an example, when we met, Alyssa was living in a modern, designer apartment with granite counters, hardwood floors and the full suite of appliances. Her expenses were nearly equal to her income.

Together, we learned to live in a much more modest space that was well laid out, very ergonomic and efficient.

In so doing, Alyssa reduced her rent from $1200/mo to $250/mo.

That’s a $950/mo savings! We did this with our entire budget.

Can you believe that Alyssa went from spending $2600/mo to keep afloat to spending $400 for her entire budget. Insane!

The point here is that our income strategy isn’t just a “how to earn more money without a job” strategy.

It’s a “reduce our need for money, then earn only what we really need” strategy.

This, like our lifestyle, is quite contrary to “the norm” of “want more, need more, spend your entire life trying to get more”.

Step 2: Changing our life from money-centric to energy-centric.

With a reduced need for substantial income, we were able to focus our resources on things which fed our energy.

At the beginning of each day we would ask “What is my energy like? What do I want to work on today?” This was such a new and different question to ask!

Previously, work was work. Show up. Clock in. Don’t ask questions. Do work. Get paid. Most days we hated working for money. More money ironically didn’t make it better.

However, when we starting giving preference to our energy it was simply astounding the amount of work we could accomplish in a day, week or month.

Combine our efforts and it was like focusing the sun through a magnifying glass.

This strategy allowed us to work in short, intense periods followed by rest or recreation periods of varying length. At times we’d work for 6 weeks or more non-stop then rest for a couple weeks until our energy recovered.

Whenever we started getting the itch to work again we knew it was time.

From September 2017 to June 2016 we basically worked non-shop. Then, summer came and we were burned out. We spent four straight days by this river swimming and napping in the hammock.

Step 3: Changing our income from location-dependent to location-agnostic.

Expecting to live far out in the country and expecting a large amount of travel in the coming months, we needed to able to work from anywhere.

Commuting and being reliant on a local economy also wasn’t an ideal option.

As a backup plan, we knew that our income needs were such that if one or both us absolutely had to get a J-O-B we could cover our expenses.

We looked to move our income online. This would allow us to “plug in” and work whenever we needed to or had internet access.

This transition wasn’t smooth, but we jumped in head first and haven’t looked back.

We’ve been able to work from our cell phones, random coffee shops and home… wherever home might be at the moment.

We had to take the Subaru a couple hours south for servicing. We were able to be productive by working for a few hours.

Step 4: Changing work hours from fixed and rigid to convenient and flexible.

One problem most jobs posed for us was time constraints. Even with contract work done via self employment, we would be constrained as to when the work could be completed… deadlines for example.

Sometimes, we would be constrained to working during day time. This conflicted with our lifestyle. We needed work that could be done on our terms. If we needed to work at 3am on a Saturday from our car, then that’s what we needed.

Moving our income online helped us achieve this also.

As I’m writing, Alyssa is on her bed writing a guest blog post for another off-grid homesteading blog and it’s just after 9pm. It’s what works for us. If we needed to jump in the car and go we could…and would!

Step 5: Changing our income from linear to passive.

The next challenge was not trading hours for dollars. We already don’t have enough time to get things done. We certainly don’t have time to trade for money.

Linear income is, by nature, bankrupt. You simply don’t have enough hours to trade with our lifestyle. You can’t get more hours either.

Our income needed to come in even if we weren’t actively working on it. Thus we focused on income streams that involved working once but would pay over and over again.

Step 6: Reducing taxation.

Most of my life I’ve had a lower income than many of my peers, but oddly, I seem to always have nicer things and more available money than them.

My motto is “It’s now how much you earn, it's how much you keep!”

Part of any good income strategy is keeping as much of it as possible.

To do this we employ good accounting practices by having a bookkeeper who keeps our records and a tax advisor to maximize deductions thereby reducing our liability. All within the law.

Step 7: Buy assets, use them to make money.

With a minimal income, you have to be strategic with how it’s spent.

From years in business I’ve often observed that successful (financially) and unsuccessful people often have all the same things.

It’s all in how they are used. We have cell phones, laptops, digital camera and internet. Sound familiar?

The difference is we use them to make money, not as retail therapy, hobbies or to collect dust. Since they are tools we invest in quality.

We use 15” MacBook Pro laptops for their speed, excellent battery life (very important when off grid) and excellent integration with our other technology like iPhones and Adobe Creative Suite.

We use 27” Apple Thunderbolt displays for their vivid workspace, energy efficiency and productivity.

Our Nikon D5200 DSLR camera and full Linco studio lighting set help us produce high quality images and video. Just to name a few.

We didn't mind buying this office setup because it makes us money on a daily basis. We don't simply use it to browse Facebook for hours.

Make Money Writing Articles Online

Writing articles online is one of my main sources of side income. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to make some extra cash on the side if you enjoy writing. How much you can make with these sites depends on how much time you have to spend on writing and how much work is available. The following sites are a few sites I have personally used and had success with.

Textbroker Textbroker is a writing site that has been around for a long time. If you have the time to devote to Textbroker. you can make a significant amount of money. I have actually made nearly $500 in one week with this site. This is rare but it is possible. When first signing up, you will be asked to submit a writing sample. Your writing sample will then be reviewed and you will be placed at a writing level. Most people start at Level 3 but if you are consistent, you can move up to the next level. One aspect I like about this site is that you can apply to Casting Calls and once accepted, you can complete what is called Team Orders . Team Orders typically pay much higher than open orders, allowing you to earn more money and have more work available to you. Most team orders require a writer to be at level 4, but some teams do accept level 3 writers. Textbroker pays via Paypal.

Writer Access Writer Access is a site that typically doesn't have a lot of work available but when there is work, it usually pays well. One aspect I don't like about this site is that claiming the work at Writer Access is rather competitive. If you constantly check throughout the day, you are bound to be able to grab an article or two. One aspect I do like about this site is that they also have casting calls that you can apply for. This is basically a way to show a client that you are a good fit for writing their article. Writer Access pays via Paypal.

iWriter iWriter is the first writing site I ever signed up for. This was before I discovered the better writing sites like Textbroker and Writer Access. If you are desperate for cash, then by all means, sign up. Like Textbroker, there are different writing levels. The higher the level, the better the pay. While the lowest level does pay peanuts, the higher levels pay significantly well if you can ever get there. The clients requesting the articles are the ones that rate your articles and can ultimately make or break you at this site. A 5 star rating can help you reach the next level but a 1 star review can negatively affect your writing rating in a significant way. iWriter pays via Paypal.

Opportunities

The more savings you have, the more opportunities there are for you. With money, you can choose to invest in mutual funds. Or you could invest in properties. In fact, you may also want to start your own businesses.

The only thing you need to do is to learn how to start one for you to start earning more money.
