First, there was traffic. Lots of traffic. Page impressions and an inflation in pride. If you did your game well, you could climb in a few months to the top of the ladder. It's called display advertising.

Then, contextual advertising came. You will not sell pixels anymore, but interactions. AdSense entered the scene and changed the game completely. The ads on your page were linked to the content. A huge leap forward. Now you could target some niches, write your text in a certain way, and voila: all the important advertisers were magically on your page. Of course, the user had to click on those ads in order for you to make money.

And then the affiliate marketing came in. Your traffic wasn't so important anymore. What started to count was your retentive audience: your subscribers. Your page views were suddenly obsolete. What follows is a detailed description of my own money making strategy on this very blog. It may not be your cup of tea, if you're used to traditional ways of making money, but then again, living prehistorically is not a viable choice anymore too, in my humble opinion.

What Is Reputation?

It's a combination of Authority and Authenticity. Those are 2 of the 7 traits of the highly successful bloggers. by the way. Reputation is what makes you believed and respected. It's also something that attracts your audience to your blog over and over again. As you will see by the end of this article, reputation is also the subtle glue which ties together your new money making mechanism.

We live in an information overloaded society. We do not have enough time to go deep into every detail. We do not want to know all the gimmicks in a new device, all we want to know is that we did a good choice. We do not want to know everything about sailing a boat, we need to know enough to get by. We need a reputable source. A truthful and authoritative answer.

If we want to change our lives. all we have to do is to follow the advice of someone else who did it. And did in a trustable way. We need somebody to rely on.

And that's exactly what reputation does to you: it makes you believable.

Shifting Your Money Focus

Suppose you're already there: you have a reputable blog, a little bit of traffic and a living ecosystem around your blogging realm. Now, when you think at monetizing it, you start all the process from the prehistory: you try some advertising, then some AdSense then some affiliate stuff. Being prehistoric, that approach will give you prehistoric results. If you're lucky. Most of the time it will give you nothing.

That's a pivotal point. Because, based on these results, you draw some incorrect conclusions. Since you don't make money with a blog, you start assuming that you're doing something wrong at the other level, in writing. You change your style aiming at a broader audience. You start to make some compromises just to attract more and more traffic. You start a numbers game. If I make 100 dollars / month using AdSense, then I will just have to multiply my audience 100 times.

Wrong. Deadly wrong. And you know why? Because when you're starting to make some compromises, you're affecting your authenticity. And authenticity is one of the 2 pillars of reputation. Basically, in search of money, you're ruining your reputation. And, even if the traffic numbers are higher and higher, you'll soon see that revenue is going lower and lower. Your loyal audience will be alienated and the new one will be too volatile.

So, what to do? Is there a way to escape this number race?

Yes, it is. Here's the short version: shift your focus. Don't use the same prehistoric tools to attract money. Go out of the box.

And now let's talk about the long version.

The Reputation Ecosystem

First of all, stop thinking at your blog as a revenue source. That sounded a little bit counter-intuitive, right? How to make money with a blog… without a blog? Well, that's a fundamental confusion. Your blog is your main tool for building reputation. Not your money making product. The money making thing is the reputation you build with it. Got it?

The blog is just a tool. Treat it like this.

Second, shift your focus toward other areas in which your reputation could be converted into money. Some of these areas may have common points with the blog (or with the online economy), some of them may not. Don't reject the latest.

Use your blog as a common land for your activities in these new areas. Here are just 5 types of activities, personally tested, which will help you make money with your reputation. Which you previously built with your blog, of course.

1. Build Your Own Digital Products

The easiest way to extend your reputation into payable goods is to create your own digital products. These products will carry on the same authority you used to create your blog, with the small but fundamental difference that they will be available only after they're paid for. These products will contain as much value as your blog, but they will be packaged differently.

The easiest example for these digital products is an ebook. It's also familiar. If you are an experienced writer on your blog, you wouldn't find it difficult to write an ebook. One very important thing to remember about digital products is that they have a specific revenue time span. It decreases over time. So, unless you become a New York Times best seller, your regular digital product won't be a recurring revenue stream.

But you can always write more ebooks, of course.

2. Promote Other, Related Digital Products

Another way to extend your reputation is to recommend other people products. This looks a lot like affiliate marketing and it even shares some technical terms (you will become an affiliate for the seller) but it's very different in nature. Because you will not actively seek buyers for these new products. You will endorse them in your articles. If your readers will find those products interesting, they will buy. There's no obligation. And no incentive either. It's just your reputation on the line.

And that's a big difference. Usually, in the affiliate marketing business, you will identify the products first, and then start building some content around those products. In my approach, you will just endorse some products that are clicking with your blog vibe. Of course, that means that you're not going to promote exotic cheese products if you're a personal development blogger. That, again, will ruin your reputation.

But, there is a but . Just promoting them wouldn't be enough. I took the time to dive in and bring out some extra value to those products. I've made my living online since the year 2000. My goal was to do more than just make money from home. I wanted to create a life worth living.

Since the year 2000, I have seen a lot of companies come and go. Almost daily, I still get approached by someone who claims to have the latest and greatest shiny new marketing thing that is going to make me an overnight success. I can't help but chuckle at some of this stuff because my own overnight success story took several years to work out. I often think of how these folks are distracted by what I call the SOS Syndrome . In this case, SOS stands for Shiny Object Syndrome .

A lot of folks get caught up in the idea of coming up with something new or sexy or shiny or exciting and they get distracted the spinning logos, flaming headlines, and a lot of stuff but they seem to forget the basic core principle of creating online success. What I want to do with this article is share my own experience with what I do to make money from home online. The reality is that it isn't all that sexy . It really isn't all that exciting . Sometimes, I get bored with what I'm actually doing but then I remember that consistently taking these boring little steps are EXACTLY what allows me to live a lifestyle that I am blessed to enjoy.

And to make matters worse, I wasn't able to spend any time with my family. I was always out working so I was missing the moments that never come back. I missed some of those first steps, first words, first dance, first sporting event. It was, frankly, depressing. I needed a way to make money from home and enjoy my life instead of just making a living .

So I started my journey.

Like most of us, I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I lost money on a few projects. I made money on a few projects. Along the way, I was able to learn more and I got better and better at this online marketing thing.

I have been spending some time thinking about how to best explain what it is that I do and I've basically broken it down to a few steps that I believe any of us can do if we are ready to learn a few things and then take consistent steps.

The first step is to actually have something for your business to sell.

There are literally countless things you could do. You might create your own products or services. You might sell someone else's products or services. You might get involved with a network marketing company. It doesn't have to be complicated. You simply need something that others are looking for and willing to purchase.

If you are offering your own products or service, you will need a way to take orders and deliver the products, of course. That's pretty simple, these days. Companies like Paypal make it very easy to accept online payments. A lot of companies offer ways you can take credit cards using your smart phone or tablet.

If you've already got a product or service, congratulations. If you are looking for something you want to offer, take a look at some of these opportunities listed by Industry to see if you find something that appeals to you.

The next step is to get a system that lets you generate prospects online.

This may be the biggest weapon any successful internet marketer uses effectively. They are called AutoResponders and I believe no business should be without one. I use my own AutoResponder service to generate online leads and then follow up with those leads to convert them in to customers.

My AutoResponder service includes what we call a Capture Page . This is simply a single web page that I am able to promote. When people visit my Capture Page, they are able to join my list (if they are interested) by giving me their name and email address. When they do, that information goes in to my marketing list and I can follow up with them over and over again.

Any time I want to sell more, I send my offer to my prospect lists. Quite often, I'm seeing sales come in within minutes of starting my email marketing broadcast.

The last step is to promote the offer online.

Now that I have my AutoResponder Campaign and Capture Page set up, I focus on promoting my capture page. I advertise right here at TheOnlineAdNetwork. com. of course. Who wouldn't want to advertise their business online while generating an additional income stream in the process? I run banner ads and text ads on various advertising resources. I run ads on traffic exchange sites, classified ad sites, Google, Facebook, etc… and I do this a LOT. Not every campaign I run is successful. Some of my campaigns actually fail miserably. So I make some adjustments to my ad copy, banner design, etc… and I run the ads again.

And this is where things can get boring. There isn't anything sexy or particularly fun about running ad copy, testing results, and running more ad copy. Sometimes, it's just boring. Some days, it's just frustrating when the results aren't coming in like I would prefer. Those days can be tough.

My big challenge is remembering to the those boring little steps every single day.

But when I get it right, the results are pretty exciting. Who doesn't enjoy getting notifications that they just made another sale? And so that gets me excited and I run some more ads! Frankly, it sure beats working for someone else on a schedule they determine for what they are willing to pay.

That's really all this internet marketing stuff comes down to.

Have an offer. Have a way to present your offer. Promote your offer.

I know you will find all sort of folks telling you it's more complicated. And they will be happy to sell you their solution.

Yes, there will be things to learn along the way. You will make mistakes. We all do. The key, in my own experience, is to keep it simple. Have something people want or need. Find a way to get it to them. Promote your solution. And, of course, deliver what you are offering.

This an an interesting, and potentially very profitable way to generate money online that I discovered a while back. It's also something that literally anybody can do.

Using this method you could quite easily add a few hundred pounds extra to your monthly (or even weekly) income.

Here's how it works…

Basically around 2 years ago when I first started making money online I decided to rent an office, pretty much for absolutely no other reason than to be able to say I owned an office (and of course to impress the ladies) .

I searched for one on Gumtree quickly found one that I liked. I called up shortly after signed an agreement, then moved in the following week.

After moving into the office I noticed a whole load of posters around the building mentioning that you could ‘refer a friend' and earn £400 for doing so. In my opinion that's an awful lot of money for such a simple task after doing some Googling it turned out there were plenty of offices in my area running a similar promotion.

Admittedly it would be difficult to make any money if you were targeting people who weren't interested in office space (ie ‘friends' as the posters stated)… But what if you targeted people who were interested in office space?

What if you had posted that advert on the classified ad website?

…Well if you had, you'd have made £400 the second I signed that contract.

So here's my idea…

Basically run a search for office space in your area then ask them if they run any promotions of this sort.

Make a list of the ones that do then from that list decide which is the best office to promote. There's a couple of things you need to base this on;

Firstly you need to look at it from a customers point of view Is the office affordable? Does it offer value for money? Is it in a good location? The better the office, the more people that will be interested. Secondly you need to look at it from your own point of view basically does it pay a good commission? Even if it's the best office in the world there's no point wasting your time promoting it if it only pays a measly commission in return for your efforts.

Once you've found the office you feel is best to promote you'll need to sign yourself up to some local classified sites this is were you'll be advertising ‘your' office space.

After signing up all you need to do is publish an advert containing details of the office, and then leave your contact details so that they can get in touch if they're interested.

Office space is in high demand so no doubt you'll quickly start receiving inquiries, and when you do all you need to do is forward them onto the office company themselves tell them you to mention that you sent them. Then if they happen to make a purchase you'll get paid a big fat commission (wahoo!).

It's a pretty straight forward method but it's something that's quite overlooked. There's certainly a lot of money to be made using it but the only chore is dealing with peoples emails/calls. Generally though if somebody inquires about office space then they end up going ahead purchasing it so you shouldn't really find your time being wasted.

Why this is a great method…

It's overlooked, meaning not that many people are doing it so you can easily position yourself make a lot of money. It's easy all you need to do is post adverts on classified ad websites respond to the occasional email or call. The commissions are usually really high as I mentioned above in my area the offices pay around £400 per person that your refer. There's no outlay since most classified ad websites offer free listings which means you can use this method without having to spend anything at all to get started.

Put it this way, at £400 per referral that would mean I'd only need to refer 10 people in a month to make a whopping £4,000! The best part is that it takes around a maximum of 1 hours work per day it's completely scalable. You can easily make more sales just by posting adverts on more classified sites, or even by using the power of social media to promote the office space too.

If you wanted to take it to the next level then you could even setup your own full on ‘office brokering' business whereby you ask the customers specific requirements, find them an office on their behalf then claim the referral fee once they decide to purchase. It would certainly be an easy business to start a very profitable one too!

How to make money as an independent developer

If you’re a full time independent developer, or a programmer who creates apps or software in your spare time with an eye towards making money, choosing the right revenue model is critical. However, it turns out that the most popular ways to generate revenue being used by developers aren’t the most lucrative ones. That finding comes from a new global survey of coders that sheds light on which revenue models are actually bringing in the most money.

VisionMobile recently surveyed 13,000 developers in 149 countries about a variety of things related to their work. The results of the survey were released last week in a report titled the State of the Developer Nation Q3 2016 . The report covers a number of topics, including developer demographics, top platforms, and favored languages and tools. It also compares the most popular versus the most lucrative revenue models for four groups of developers: those focusing on mobile apps, cloud services, the Internet of Things, and desktop apps.

Based on this survey, here are the revenue models that developers should be using to make the most money, versus what they're actually choosing.

e-Commerce (particularly for iOS) makes the most for mobile developers

The most popular revenue model for mobile app developers is advertising (not surprising, given how easy it is to plug into an ad network) chosen by 46% of those developers who say they want to make money. However, only 17% of developers who rely primarily on advertising make more than $10,000 per month from their apps, while 72% make less than $5,000 per month and 51% make $500 or less. The report authors point out that advertising can, in fact, be lucrative, but that it requires “gigantic audiences that remain engaged for a long time.” For most developers, though, it’s not likely to generate much money.

Instead, the survey reveals that mobile app developers who rely on e-commerce (that is, the sale of real world non-digital goods and services) are making the most money. Only 10% of mobile developers are using e-commerce as their revenue model, but 37% of those who do make $10k per month or more. This, the report authors concluded, makes it obvious that “the future lies in transactions actioned from within an application.”

To get even more granular, mobile developers relying on e-commerce who primarily target iOS devices make the most, with 50% of them earning more than $10k per month. This is significantly more than the 36% of e-commerce mobile developers who choose to target Android first. “The fact remains that iPhone users are, on average, richer than those with an Android device, and are thus going to spend more on goods and services of all kinds,” VisionMobile analysts wrote.

Royalties pay off in the mature desktop market

Developers working on desktop apps, like those doing mobile apps, are choosing advertising most frequently as their revenue model. However, it’s those who are relying primarily on royalties and licensing fees who are making the most money. In total, 24% of desktop developers are making more than $10k per month. VisionMobile argued that the maturity of the desktop market makes it a good candidate for the licensing model. “It’s not a very easy model to get started with but fits the more established market well,” they wrote.

The report also noted that selling services to other developers is the second most lucrative revenue model for desktop app developers, which again, makes sense given the size of the desktop market. “Developers represent a very large group of desktop power users who need a lot of software to run their businesses,” the authors concluded.

Cloud service developers are the most likely to make good money

The survey found that developers focusing on cloud services rely the most on contract work to make money. However, similar to desktop developers, it’s royalties and software licensing that are proving to be the most lucrative revenue-generating approaches for this group. Overall, cloud service coders are doing the best among these four groups of developers, with 28% making more than $10k per month

Software licensing is working for IoT developers (for now)

VisionMobile noted that most developers working in the Internet of Things are trying to sell physical products as a way to make money. As many are finding out, even with crowdsourcing to help with funding, manufacturing and selling hardware is a difficult way to make money. What’s had better success is software licensing which, so far, has shown to be the most lucrative revenue model. However, as the authors noted, the IoT market is still so nascent, very little money is being made yet by anyone; only 16% of IoT developers are making more than $10k per month while 79% are making less than $5k.
