For those of you who aren't familiar with the industry, let me quickly explain how paid surveys work.

When companies want to find out what consumers think about their product and services so they can improve or develop new ones, they turn to market research companies.

Market research companies have online (as well as offline) panels where they pay a group of panelists to share their thoughts and experiences about these products and services.

You probably are familiar with focus groups. Well, online surveys are kind of like that, except you answer surveys via online forms and questionnaires.

What kind of questions do surveys ask?

Well, anything that can help the intended company fine-tune a product or develop a new, better version.

When it comes to business, data is important.

After all, if you don't know what your customers want, how can you make things that they will buy?

Survey questions cover all kind of topics, but the end goal is usually the same to understand the consumers and make products that want to buy.

They can be as detailed or as simple as a yes or no question.

To give you an idea, let's assume we are conducting a survey about PayPal, the company/website that allows you to pay and get paid quickly and easily online.

Some of the questions you can expect could be:

How easy is it to send money from your PayPal account? Do you prefer to login on your phone or on your computer? How many times a week/month do you use PayPal to pay or get paid? What new features would you like to see?

Now, of course this is an over simplified version, but you get the idea. The idea is to gather information and data from actual consumers and use that data to improve or create better products.

Why do they pay people to answer surveys?

Because nobody likes to do things for free!

Because people need an incentive to take the time from their busy lives to answer questions that will further benefit and enrich big companies and corporations.

In order to get people to take the time to answer these questions and fill out the surveys, MR companies have to incentive the efforts. So, they pay you!

Where does the money come from?

From businesses and companies that pay them to conduct these surveys.

In order to get the data that the companies and manufactures so desperately want and need, they have to pay MR companies to conduct surveys son their behalf.

Why won't companies do it themselves?

The same reason why you pay somebody to fix your car when you could buy the tools and parts, learn the trade, then fix it yourself!

Because it's expensive and time consuming.

Because it's much easier and cheaper to pay an expert to do it correctly.

How do I get paid?

Now, not all survey sites operate or pay the same way.

Generally there are three ways you get paid:

These days though, almost all survey sites have or are moving towards cash and gift card payments on top of giving sweepstakes entries.

How much money can I make taking surveys?

If you are serious about making some real cash through filling out online survey forms, at some point, the question of how much you could possibly make by doing so would have to enter your mind.

In all honesty, there is no straight answer!

There are many factors that determine how much an individual survey pays.

The length of the survey. The product/topic the survey is about And things of that nature.

So subject to all these variable dynamics, you could find surveys that pay a paltry $0.25 to a generous $200 (this is the maximum I have heard of).

Before you get too excited, it is important to point out that the overwhelming majority of surveys should take no more than 15 minutes to fill out, and the average payout probably falls around $1 to $5.

As a rule of thumb, you can imagine that the payout is usually in direct proportion to the amount of time it takes to complete a survey.

I would say, an average panelist, who is a member of a few survey sites, can make make an extra few hundred dollars a year.

Granted, there will always be people who are going to make more than that because they sign up for more sites (thus increasing their chances of qualifying for more surveys) and spend more time doing surveys.

Why do I have to qualify to take a survey?

This is one of the most confusing parts of taking surveys for money for a lot of people.

Unfortunately, a lot of people think because they didn't qualify for a survey, that the company conducting it is somehow scamming them.

That's not true at all!

Remember how we said companies want to gather feedback from their target consumers?

If you don't use PayPal at all, what good does asking you how many times a month do you send money with PayPal do for PayPal? Why would they waste money ask questions from people who don't even use their product?

So that's why all surveys have what are known as pre screening questions. These pre screening questions help research companies gather data only from people who belong to the demographic that the survey is intended for.

That's why almost every survey panel asks you to complete your profile. Some even give you points for doing it. They use your profile information to match you with surveys that you are more likely to qualify for. But sometimes there may be a small criteria that you don't meet, that's where those pre screening questions come into play.

Paid survey scams: what's up with that?

As I mentioned earlier, unfortunately, there are survey scams out there.

You see, because making money with paid surveys sounds so easy and awesome, scammers know that people are much likelier to fall for scams related to it.

They promise you the moon.

They tell you how you can make a full time income in your pajamas on your couch taking fun surveys!

Who wouldn't want that?

Unfortunately, no body can make a living taking surveys. Ok, there may be a few people here and there that can make enough with surveys that they can say it's their job, but for the majority it's just a way to earn some extra cash.

So, how can you stay away from survey scams?

The best and easiest way to avoid scams is to remember that all legitimate survey sites backed by real market research companies, are free to join.

No real survey panel will charge you a registration fee. After all, they are supposed to pay you for your opinion, not you paying them to join their site!

Keep this in mind, though, a joining fee may not be enough indication that the site is up to no good. But with zero joining fees, there is no chance you can lose money unwittingly.

Another useful piece of advice is to do your research online before deciding on any survey websites. You can check out online forums and reviews, find out how they rate by the BBB, and whatever else that will help you gain as much insight as practical before joining any site.

Another year. Another skeevy roommate. And another set of unbearable quirks, mannerisms, obsessions.

I'd known this guy in high school. Back then, there was an organization, tenuously attached to the English department called (somewhat confusingly) the Greek Honor Society. Time when, the students involved actually studied the variety of Greek language usually considered traditional classical Greek (that is, a synthetic language having only a faint resemblance to any Greek ever spoken by actual Grecian people alive or dead). At the time of my involvement, mid-70's, it was a haven for "philosophical" students run by a teacher with a penchant for Abraham Maslow and his school, Great Literature, and, unfortunately, a great deal of pseudoscience. ranging from ESP to Chariots of the Gods? and far beyond. You know, a great place to find good conversation, a willing sexual partner of your choice, and a pot connection while feeling intellectually smug about it. Though bright, articulate, and a misfit (the basic qualifications for membership) I was mostly a minor player. Matt, on the other hand, was quite enthusiastic, though, try as I may, I can't remember much about him otherwise. Fast forward about twenty years.

I was trying to find a cheap place to live, we met by chance, and he just happened to have a spare room.

He's put on. well, quite a bit of weight. (As have I, to be quite honest.) He's also a much-medicated schizophrenic. with additional lashings of testosterone. with the result that what was a handsome, shy, intelligent, charming young man has now become bloated and physically awkward, with vacant eyes and greasy hair and skin. He also has severe memory. language. and social deficits, though able to drive a car and work as an adult babysitter to several people down the next level in mental health functionality. In short, the uncanny valley applies here: he's just off-center enough in appearance and behavior to be more-than-slightly off-putting. It's also meant that he's simply not had anything resembling a normal adult life of love and work, with the result that he's very lonely, broke, and horny.

To combat this, he relies on formulaic "niceness": obsequious interest in whatever someone is doing/saying, small favors, some hearty cheerfulness, and all the usual tricks that most of your parents probably gave you when you complained of being unpopular in high school. And, for want of a better term, self-improvement.

His apartment, neat, though lifeless, is chock-a-block full of every get rich quick scheme that merited an infomercial. and more. Being his hapless flatmate, I've managed to scan more than a few of them, and have noticed some earmarks of scammery, which I'll summarize here:

Lifestyle issues Do you know the make and model of car Suze Orman drives? Or how many bathrooms are in each of the Motley Fools' houses? Or, for that matter, Warren Buffet's religious affiliation or how he spent his last vacation?

Scamsters know that their audience isn't swift on arithmetic. and is going to be confused by percentages and compound interest. However, small bright objects hold the attention of most mammals (and even some birds and reptiles) and large, shiny automobiles, piles of greenish paper, and neo-Victorian houses impress most higher primates. Everyone wants to go to Disney World or Hawaii. Therefore, scammers love flashing their lifestyles, and point out that you, too, can own all these things, too.

They also know that their prospective audience is most likely poor, overworked, and undereducated, with little idea of how or why the system works as it does. So, there's a great deal of talk about how little - or no-money-down investments, the "lazy way" to wealth, so-called "secrets" of "the rich", and a downright contempt for education. Also, a great many of them claim at least some religious background so I'll go on to my next warning signal.

"Spirituality"/Product padding In order to transform the sort of Jimmy Corrigan I see every day at breakfast into a billionaire tycoon of course, would take a bit of makeover. And very few people, especially those who are poor, are going to simply go out and buy a book to read, even if it does teach them something vitally useful. In the investment scamster world, the minimum you can buy to get their information is a "course".

You see, you can't possibly get the benefit of their techniques simply by reading them. You have to live and work with them daily, the way the author does, who applies them in his daily multimillion-dollar deals. So it is that Carelton H. Sheets's Real Estate for No Money Down course (which is one of the more professionally produced examples, and the one I'll use here) is written on three workbook-style pamphlets of about fifty pages each in plastic bindings with wide, lined margins for notes and many real estate terms (such as "bankrupcy") written in sidebars. Additional help is given in an "audiotape library", videos, and a Mentor (which appears to be a Sheets Courses salesman with the book handy) available 24/7 on the phone -- none of this seems, from my snooping, to contain anything other than the basic text. However, in order to get the full benefit of this material, it's essential to give it your full and studious attention every single night, for at least an hour before bed, supplimenting it with cassette tapes during the morning commute. Additionally, videotapes can be viewed during one's leisure time, and key concepts reviewed at odd hours of the day on handy wallet-sized cards. You can also, if truly dedicated to wealth creation, go to what would be called a class, or course, either at a local hotel or in retreat, but what in the scamster biz is called "boot camp". (Just about the only thing he doesn't recommend is talking over, or showing your course material to anyone not taking the course.)

Partly, I suspect, it really does take some of the audience this much reinforcement to retain what, as you will see, is a very small amount of material. The other reason is that what people buy in these courses isn't the real-life possibility of easy money -- it's the euphoric pipe dream of "success".

The first volume bears this out: it's largely given over to a sermon on the value of setting and focussing on goals for one's self, whether they be to own fifty rental properties (a good minimum is twenty-five, he says) or to own one's own home, with six bedrooms, four baths and a pool. Meditating on these goals, at least a few minutes every day, is one of the keys to success. Accordingly, since "positivity" is the order of the day, the book has almost no indication of pitfalls and very few warnings on how the system can go wrong. Everything's fine in Scammyland! And remember, you CAN do it! Think of how happy you'll be when YOU can treat your wife to nice things. even a home of your own! Once you have your first property, no matter how small, it will all come easy. Now lie back, and listen to the tape. it will happen only if you can believe. And NEVER discuss these matters with those who haven't taken the course! Dream stealers abound who "pooh-pooh" other's success out of jealousy and ill will, even trying to talk you out of it, claiming reason and logic will win out. but don't listen to them.

Illegal/Unethical/Impractical Techniques -- Unrealistic Results So what's the actual technique? Well, you have to read through Volume Two, and thoroughly understand real estate before being able to use it. This is the section that scambusters love to call the "dictionary out of sequence", a simple illustration of buying and selling land with just enough terms defined as to make the prospective Donald Trump sound knowlegeable. This is necessary, since the actual technique calls for a lot of fast talking.

The idea is to find a distressed seller (someone desperate to sell, and sell fast, such as a recent widow with medical bills) who will take 80% of the money, immediately, in cash. How to get this money? Well, with a good credit record, you can get a mortgage for this 80%. She, on the other hand, can easily mortgage her property and get the remaining 20%. But what about stay at home moms who want to work from home? True, one of the reasons that moms (or dads) choose to stay at home is to reduce expenses on things like daycare. T he lure of making a killing and escaping the rat race runs deep. It doesn't matter what gender, postcode, or social class – people of all sorts want a quick fix to their problems.

But fast fortunes don't tend to come to those who seek them – or at least not the way they're advertised.

The success of the National Lottery, for instance, is not founded on the great returns on investment you get from lottery tickets.

Vastly more likely, you'll get two numbers right and be so close on a third.

All your life.

What about traditional gambling? Everyone knows the odds suck, and pretty much nobody knows a long-term winner. People don't walk past betting shops saying to themselves: Ah, there's a bunch of fine fellows making their way in the world . Yet people still gamble.

The list goes on. Day trading and spread betting, daydreaming of being a glamour model or a professional footballer, metal detecting, bank robbing – young or old, man or woman, Northern grump or Southern ponce, somewhere out there is a dubious money making scheme with your name on it.

If you think there isn't, you probably just haven't come across it yet.

Aim high, hit low

Indeed, investing can be a sucker's game, if you let it.

Much of the poor reputation of the financial services industry is well-earned, but we should carry some of the blame for ourselves.

People expect too much – returns without risk – and they expect it too soon. Bad things happen when you confuse getting financially secure with getting rich quick.

A sensible approach is to read up on passive investing, know the long-term real return from a balanced portfolio is likely to be between 3-6%, plan your future. and then execute for 30 years.

A bad approach is to read on a bulletin board about an ex-SAS commando who has got the ear of an African dictator and the keys to a shoe-in of a gold mine, and then remortgage your house and pile in.

Few of us are that bonkers. But most people can be seduced by the idea of superior returns from star fund managers, or from tips in newspapers.

Or else we see that our shares have gone up 30% and our bonds have fallen by 5%, and we think great, I'll have some more of that , shift the whole lot to equities, and then sell out in a panic when the stock market crashes because we've no longer got a safety buffer.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having 5-10% of your money in a speculative ‘fun' portfolio if it keeps you from tinkering with your main strategy.

Heck, I don't think there's anything wrong with purely active investing in individual shares if you're realistic about why you're doing it and what you are likely to achieve.

But trying to make lottery winnings money on a school dinners budget – by gambling with your hard-earned savings and putting your pension at risk in the pursuit of an extra 5% here and 5% there – that's a recipe for missing your target, and so for excessive beans on toast in your old age.

Fact is, diversified balanced portfolios are not going to turn you into Richard Branson or Steve Jobs. They're not meant to.

Passive investing is straightforward, easy, and I recommend it.

But if you want to be the next Richard Branson or Steve Jobs, you're going to have to do something hard, not something easy.

Easy and hard ways to get rich

I know there are a few crooks, flukes, and bankers who have made fortunate or ill-gotten gains from long odds.

But if you look at the vast majority of people who started with nothing and achieve great or early wealth in life – as opposed to modest and meaningful financial freedom – they usually did something difficult, rather than chase easy money.

Here are a few examples.

Easy money: Day trading. blindly following tips from strangers on bulletin boards, reading about Kondratiev waves and market timing, insider dealing.

Hard but achievable money: Saving vastly more than you spend from an early age into a diversified portfolio, spending your days looking for illiquid micro-cap value investments, setting up your own hedge fund and profiting from other people's money. (Hey, it worked for Warren Buffett!)

Easy money: Flipping off-plan properties at the top of a bubble, buying into hot property funds at the top of a bubble, using your credit card to secure a buy-to-let that you claim is your own home.

Hard money: Hunting down genuine development opportunities, renovating rundown houses using sweat equity , building a solid portfolio of investment property over 5 years as a part - to full-time job.

Easy money: Knock up an affiliate website touting cheap life insurance products, spam marketing, anything advertised that claims you'll make 40-100% a year with no effort.

Hard money: Buying into a proven franchise with a six-figure initial fee, launching a start-up business that serves a genuine need, becoming a contractor or a consultant in your own industry after years of experience and networking.

Easy money: Ripping off 50 Shades of Grey with a Kindle novel about a female banker who likes to step on her underlings in high heels, being an angel investor in a theatre production, blogging about investing.

Hard money: Devote 10-20 years to honing your creative passion to the point where you don’t care whether you get paid you love it so much, and then finding a niche audience that is happy to pay you for your talent.

Easy money: Boiler room tout, porn star, drug dealer, as well as deluded ambitions for most of us like celebrity photographer, music producer, or sports star.

Hard money: Corporate lawyer, veterinarian, accountant, amazing plumber, own the boiler room.

If getting rich through investing, punting, or peddling tat was easy, we'd all be in the 99% and the 1% would have Primark to themselves.

The money shot

There will be exceptions. Some porn stars make millions. but most are literally one-shot wonders. There will always be a few people who put their net worth into a single growth stock and make a fortune. And I'm sure we haven't seen the last multi-million selling DIY Kindle novel.

But the odds in all these areas are immense.

A clue is in how easy it is to get going – how simple it is to place your bet.

It's very easy to buy a share. It's very easy to start a blog. It's very easy to take all your clothes off for a man who promises to introduce you to Hugh Hefner.

But none of those things are very likely to make you rich.

In contrast, hard things are usually rewarded – if you put the hard work in, or do the hard mental work, or both.

If you cannily buy a rundown property in a great part of town and show up every weekend to renovate it, you might make 20-30% profit. If you do that 10 times, working your way up the chain as you go, you could make a real difference to your life. At the cost of far fewer free weekends!

Is it worth it? Maybe, or maybe not – money isn't everything. and they're not selling extra time.

It's for you to decide how much you care about being wealthy.

Just don't expect your sensible savings plan to make you rich quick – because such an attitude is only likely to make you poorer.
