I want to work from home, but it’s not part of our culture Add to

I want to work from home two days a week. How can I approach this with my boss as it is not really the “culture” here?

If there is an easy way to do this, it is when you’re hired – it becomes part of the compensation and work arrangement upon joining the company. If you are trying to do this after, there are a couple of avenues you can explore.

The first is to float the idea with human resources, asking if it has ever been part of the working arrangements with employees.

Sometimes, it can help to get support from others before you make your case with your supervisor. It may be something that HR is considering rolling out. Gather as much history and information as you can.

Secondly, talk with your boss about why you would like to work from home.

Articulate why you are asking for a change in your working arrangements, all the while carefully communicating that your work, both quality and quantity, will not be compromised.

Go through how you intend on keeping in touch with your colleagues via technology and how you will be available for any calls, meetings, etc. if needed.

Do not expect a decision now. In fact, ask your boss to think about it and determine a time to continue the conversation.

Here is how I would approach your boss with a request to work from home two days a week. First of all, since it is not the “culture,” you need to be able to sell the value of you being out of the office two days a week.

It is quite simple to imagine the benefits you would receive personally, but it also needs to have some tangible benefit to your employer. You need to be able to demonstrate that your work, or a portion thereof, is suitable for teleworking. For example, if you require quiet, uninterrupted time to produce work such as reports or business plans, and others are not dependent on you being there face to face at all times, then this might be a more productive way to achieve results for your benefit as well as the company’s.

It would be nice to know why you want to telecommute. Is it for life balance, or family responsibilities such as elderly parents or young children, or perhaps avoiding a long commute five days a week?

As an employer who has had (and has approved) many of these requests over the years, if the rationale is good, your performance trends towards exemplary, the productivity and quality of your work can be measured remotely, and you have a strong work ethic that is not easily distracted by working from home then I would strongly consider it, and hopefully so would your employer.

You know your employer best, so develop a number of key points on why this is of mutual benefit, including retention, productivity, being more carbon neutral, etc. and bring your proposal forward.

To show respect for your employer, do not ask for all or nothing, instead ask for a trial period of three to six months so you can demonstrate the value of your telecommuting proposal. Good luck!

I Want to Work from Home: These 17 Companies Are Hiring Remote Workers!

Last Updated November 30, 2016

I want to work from home. What Can I do?

There is actually a bunch of ways you can make money at home.

You could start your own home based business.

Or, if you don't want to deal with investing money and time running your own business, you can find companies that hire people to work remotely, from home.

These can be part-time or full-time positions, as well as contract-based, that include positions like:

Try Swagbucks, the famous rewards program that pays you for watching videos, taking surveys, shopping and more.

Nursing Data Entry Customer Service Call Center Etc.

1. TeleWork. gov

This site went live when Congress passed the “Telework Enhancement Act of 2016 ” which made it possible for federal agencies to hire people to work from home.

It's a congress backed site, can't get any more legit than that!

Where to apply :

2. Bernard BPO

This is one of the major companies that provide customer support services to some of the world's biggest businesses.

This is a job for you if you like getting paid to talk on the phone all day long.

They offer both part and full-time positions. As a full-time employee, you can work up to 40 hours per week and as a part-time employee you can work up to 30 hours per week.

They do offer benefits as well

They pay is between $8 to $9 per hour, which is pretty low, but considering that you save money on all the commute costs (gas, lunch, car maintenance, etc,) I don't think it's that bad.

You get paid every other week through a debit card or direct deposit.

Where to apply :

3. Brainfuse

I have talked about making money as a Tutor online finding gigs on Tutor sites. But this is a company that hires you directly to work with students online.

Their process of hiring is a little different.

Need Extra Cash for Free?

If you like getting paid for surveys, and are going to join only one site, I would recommend you choose Ipsos-iSay. Ipsos is the most fun and well-paying panel. Give it a try to see how you like it. It is free anyway!

I want to Work from Home. What Should I Do?

by Jennifer Stewart

The number of people who are taking control of their own lives and setting up Home Based Businesses is growing rapidly - latest figures are that approximately 125,000 people every week take this major step.

Making the decision to go out on your own takes courage; deciding what you're going to do takes ingenuity and research. So what should you do?

My darling dad always used to say that the Ideal Product was one that everyone wanted; was consumable; could be sold for a reasonable price; was economical to produce and offered great value!

Sounds like a bit of a tall order, doesn't it? But look around at the products that have been mega-money-makers: the first that springs to mind is tobacco. It meets most of the criteria when you think about it - for a while there, everyone wanted cigarettes, they were consumable (and addictive - no doubt a bonus to the tobacco companies), they were cheap to buy and they could be produced very cheaply. The "value" has since been seriously questioned.

Coca Cola is similar - clever (and expensive) advertising campaigns have seen to it that everyone wants Coke; it's consumable, cheap enough for it to be bought regularly and cheap to produce (how much can artificially coloured and flavoured water cost?) Again, its value is questionable.

Are there any products that meet all of the criteria?

Yes!

What is the hottest trend at the moment?

The Internet.

What does everyone want?

To be connected, and to be able to use the Internet.

Once initial development costs have been met, software programs, that enable beginners and experienced users to set up an Internet presence, are economical to produce (or reproduce) and can be sold for affordable prices. If payment is organised on an annual basis and is significantly lower than similar programs - then you're on a winner!

Do such products exist?

Yes, Virginia, they do - all you have to do is look for them in the right places.

So if you've had enough of life as an employee and you're planning to set up your own home based business, do the sensible thing and hitch your wagon to the fastest rising star today - the Internet.
