Think about it - whatever business you are in, if you were working in the office you kids would never hear a word of your business language or experience you working first hand.
Most children are not even aware of the type of business mums and dads do when they work away from home. Whereas by contrast, my two oldest kids aged seven and six, can eloquently tell anyone who asks what my two businesses are.
When my kids ask what I am doing in my work time, I try to answer honestly.
Things like "I am working on a strategy to generate more sales to make more money" creates a simple conversation that teaches children the value of money and how hard it is to obtain it.
As my children are getting older, they are beginning to assist with basic tasks like proof reading and video recording for pocket money. My kids are fluent in four languages and regularly get paid for performing their languages in videos that I use to promote my company. I have taught them that their multilingualism is a skill that not many people have, and that they can earn good money from this skill.
Working from home also means that I get to spend a lot more time with my kids.
Time and time again I hear of mums who are rushing out the door at 7am to make it to the childminder, and don't make it back to pick their kids up again until 6 or 7pm. This truly horrifies me. I can't imagine what it must be like for those poor mums and kids.
However do not be fooled, as working from home is not always easy.
Children can get in the way and interrupt you (constantly sometimes) in the middle of some of your most important tasks.
I'm recording videos for the success classroom currently and I can't count the times that the kids have burst in and I've had to scrap the whole video! It's frustrating making slow progress.
However, I have found that if I create a physical barrier, such as a lock on my office door, they seem to respect the lock and not come knocking.
Most importantly however (and worth remembering) working from home allows you to spend much more quality time with your kids than you would ever get to working nine to five in an office job. And really, what could be better than that?
