Working from home is ideal for some, difficult for others. It comes with many benefits but as with any business, concessions must be made. Let's review some of the Pros and Cons of working from home.
A big draw to the world of online business is the ability to create your own schedule. This flexibility provides time for family, special events, non-work related appointments, and hobbies. Because you are essentially able to reach your audience (or customers) 24 hours, 7 days a week, those running online businesses are able to work hours that normal 9 to 5'ers cannot. For example, being a stay-at-home mom of three little ones, I am able to work a small amount in the late morning while my youngest naps and my two older children are at school. The majority of my work is done after 8pm when my children are asleep and all is quiet. Therefore, THE HOURS of an online business are a huge PRO for me.
Another pro to working online is the money you save compared to building a tradition "brick and mortar" business. There is no space to rent, employees to hire, wardrobe to purchase, gas to pay for due to your commute, or in most cases, inventory to buy. You will have costs such as advertising, marketing tools, possibly a system to help run your online stats, autoresponder emails etc., This investment is however, much smaller than that of a traditional offline business.
Another possible advantage of running your own Online Business is the opportunity to work within a Niche you really enjoy and that interests you. But remember it is very important to make sure that the Niche or category you choose to work within is profitable, has a high conversion rate, and is IN DEMAND in the current market.
Working from home can have its disadvantages at times. One really needs a strong sense of self-discipline to stay on task. There are many day-to-day distractions right in front of us when we are in our homes developing our online business. It is very important to have a ROUTINE and a SCHEDULE and do your best to stick to it! Schedule family time and non-related work events just as you would business tasks. Ask for your families support in this as well. Explain to them that there are times during the day when you must work, but that there is also time carved out just for them as well. Having your families respect and cooperation, especially during the early days of building your business can be critical to your success.
Finally, make sure you DO YOUR RESEARCH! Choose a company and an opportunity that is in line with your interests and values. Research their reputation. Talk to as many of their current employees or affiliates as you can. Make sure they have a solid, reputable, opportunity before you invest your time or your resources into them.
Working from home can be a financially and personally rewarding experience. Just remember to do your research, make a schedule, follow a routine, and DO THE WORK! Wishing you MUCH SUCCESS!
