Being Flexible and Working From Home

So working from home seems exciting.

Working from home and being able to spend time with your children seems even more exciting.

One of the most difficult challenges that you will have when you are just getting started is HOW to really make working from home work for you while making sure your children's needs are taken care of without pulling your hair out!

For those of you with infants, you will want to adjust your schedule to nap times. However, when babies are awake they need a lot of attention. Just expect that nothing will get accomplished during this time and if it does, well that is awesome.

When you have absolute focus this is when you get things done. When you try to do too much, this is when the frustration tends to shows up.

When the kids are bit older they may actually seem to want more of your attention. Make sure you have set times for them to play and you will be working. You will probably have to do this in small increments like 30 minutes to 1 hour at a time.

The more prepared you are on what you need to get done during your focused time, the more you will accomplish, however just understand that you will have to be some what flexible as the days don't always go according to plan.

The best thing about working from home is that you can be flexible and design your work hours based around the ever changing needs of your children. Once or twice a week I even have a babysitter come to the house. I'm still there if the kids need me, but I'm able to get a bit more work in and the babysitter takes care of the small intrusions that I'd normally get.

Make certain that you don't use the kids as an excuse to not get your work done.

Trust me, it's easy to do. Set a schedule with LOTS of white space. What do I mean by that? Well, if something will take you an hour, make it for 1 hours. Also, share your schedule. When everyone in the household, including your husband, knows when you will be working everyone adjusts and they understand it's mommy's work time. Plus, having a schedule is easier on everyone.
